How to be Anonymous on the Internet
This is going to show you some basic tips of keeping your identity secret while on the internet. The more of these tips you use at the same time the better.
Tip 1: Use private browsing on your browser
First step is to make sure you don't keep information stored on your actual computer or phone. Having browser history stored on your computer makes you vulnerable to someone with physical access to your device but also to viruses.
Most browsers have an option called private browsing. When in private browsing nothing is saved. It will not keep history, log ins, or cookies. This way you don't have to go back and delete everything when you are done.
Keep in mind though, websites you connect to and your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can still track you, private browsing does not hide you from others on the internet.
Tip 2: Use a fake email (https://www.GuerrillaMail.com)
Guerrilla Mail allows you to make a temporary and fake email address. It's a wonderful tool, they also have app version for smartphones. I suggest to always use a fake email on anything over the net like craigslist or otherwise when dealing with strangers.
Tip 3: Use a fake number
There are loads of free text apps like Textnow.com which is a smartphone text app you can also use in a browser on your computer. Use your fake email to make a fake account and it will give you a phone number to use.
Tip 4: Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Here is where you can begin to mask your location, get past internet blocks so you watch porn on McDonald's public wifi, and even keep your ISP from tracking your activities online. A VPN is the first step to true online anonymity. There are many easy ones to use for beginners who have no technical knowledge like "BetterNet" which is available for free on computers and smartphones. They have plans that cost money but I personally just use the free options.
Here is a video with a tutorial on how to use betternet
Tip 5: Use TOR Browser
TOR browser works almost like any other browser but it also has a built in feature where it connects you to your website after connected you to numerous other computers making it extremely difficult to track you. Below is a tutorial video on how to use TOR Browser
Tip 6: Just don't share personal info
Don't share anything personal like real names, or anything you don't want people to know. Always meet others in public places is advised as well.
Tip 7: Use public wifi locations (For the super paranoid!)
If you are super paranoid about being tracked then do all of the above but use a device that has never been connected to your home internet, and has only ever had fake accounts on it. NEVER put any real personal information on it. Again this is for those who really don't want to be found. Bonus points if you buy a super good wifi card that can pick up public wifi networks from a mile away then travel out of your city before connecting to the furthest wifi network you can reach from your car and/or hotel. One last time, this is just for the people wearing tin foil hats, but it defiantly would get the job done.
Thank you for reading this.
I hope this helps you stay safe on the Internet.
